Description

Macrolophus pygmaeus The bright green mirid bug Macrolophus pygmaeus is a key predator against greenhouse and tobacco whitefly, especially in tomato and eggplant crops. Once its population is at full strength, it turns into a highly efficient predator, safeguarding the crop against unexpected infestations. M. pygmaeus is able to consume about 50 whitefly larvae and eggs per day. Also for controlling the South American leaf miner Tuta absoluta, this mirid bug is an ally which should not be underestimated. Now and then it also likes to eat a spider mite, a moth egg or an aphid among others. The nymphs are very appreciated for their contribution to control pests. They act more locally, as they do not fly. And can thus remain locally in hot spots. In order to optimize control of whitefly, a combined release with whitefly parasitoids is the best strategy. The use of the alternative food sources Nutrimac and Artemac results in a boosting effect of a M. pygmaeus population and helps to maintain and disperse it in the crop.
