SummaryFarrow-to-wean keeps sows and their piglets in the same pen from farrowing until weaning, minimising transfers and reducing stress and disease risk. The Pro Dromi variant uses flip-up crates to convert the farrowing pen into a 6.5 m² weaner pen when the sow is removed.
Reasons to believe- Flip-up crates create a farrow-to-wean pen of 6.5 m²
- Crate confines the sow only during the first days after farrowing
- Reduces labour for transfers and sanitising by keeping piglets in one pen
- Improves biosecurity by minimising pen-to-pen movement
- Maintains a familiar environment for piglets, reducing stress and the risk of weaning dip
Product descriptionFarrow-to-wean is a system that retains sows and their litters in the same pen from farrowing through to weaning. When the sow is removed, the crate is flipped up to convert the pen into a weaner pen, providing sufficient space (6.5 m²) for piglets to grow into robust weaners. The system reduces handling and movement of piglets, supporting welfare and biosecurity. The concept was developed with family Brummelhuis (2016); development partner Vereijken contributed the flooring and later introduced its own F2W variant. Farrow-to-wean is offered in a Pro Dromi variant for free farrowing and in a conventional version.
Technical specifications- Pen area (created by flip-up crates): 6.5 m²
- Flip-up crate design: crate can be flipped up when the sow is removed to convert into a weaner pen
- Sow confinement: confinement only during the first few days after farrowing
- Biosecurity benefit: piglets remain in one area, reducing transfer-related disease risk
- Welfare benefit: familiar environment reduces stress and helps prevent weaning dip
- Operational benefit: fewer weaning and sanitising activities, reducing labour
- Variants: Pro Dromi (free farrowing) and conventional farrow-to-wean versions
- Origin/development: concept developed with family Brummelhuis; Vereijken contributed flooring and later developed its own F2W system
