Description

Overview
OptiScan is a 3D camera system designed for in-pen weighing of fattening pigs. It estimates live weight without removing animals from their pens, reducing handling and animal stress. The system typically achieves 97%–98% accuracy. Operators scan animals in the pen, select individuals at target weight, and store measurements for later analysis.

Weight-based pricing and optimal market weight
Market payments for fattening pigs depend on delivering animals within target weight ranges. Traditional methods rely on farmer judgment or mechanical scales that require moving animals. OptiScan allows fast, repeatable weight checks in the pen so farmers can time marketing to the appropriate weight window and avoid price penalties.

How OptiScan works
OptiScan captures 3D scans of animals in their pen and applies an algorithm to estimate live weight from shape and volume data. The camera integrates RFID to link weight records to individual animal IDs. Measurements are stored and can be exported to farm management software for traceability and analysis.

Accuracy
OptiScan technology was developed by H+L Agrar (Germany). The algorithm was trained on data from more than 6,300 animals and over 10 million weighings. Typical estimation accuracy is 97%–98%. By measuring body shape rather than relying on single mechanical weighings, OptiScan reduces errors due to stomach or bladder fill and daily physiological variation.

OptiMarker – Automatic Marking
OptiMarker can be supplied to enable automatic weighing and marking. When installed, weight is recorded at each drinking event or passage through a gate; animals that reach a preset weight are automatically marked. This automates identification of market-ready animals and simplifies selection at loading.

Integration and further applications
Cooperl acquired H+L products in 2023 and plans to extend OptiScan applications. Beyond weight estimation, scan data can support monitoring and analytics (growth tracking, health indicators). RFID linkage facilitates integration into farm-management workflows and traceability systems.
