The MAL-22 mud logging analyser by BD Inventions is a semi-portable bench-top instrument for fast, automated determination of the calcite/dolomite ratio in soil and sediment samples. Designed for mud logging and geological sampling, it provides carbonate-content data to support lithology interpretation and reservoir evaluation. Conforms with EN ISO 10693:2013, ASTM D4373-02(2007) and ASTM D1756-02(2007).

Two-step automated procedure

• Step 1: Rapid pressure rise after acid mixing — calcite detection
• Step 2: Slower sustained pressure rise over minutes — dolomite detection

Chemical reactions
1) CaCO3(s) + 2 HCl(l) -> CaCl2(l) + CO2(g) + H2O(l)
2) CaMg(CO3)2(s) + 4 HCl(l) -> CaCl2(l) + MgCl2(l) + 2 CO2(g) + 2 H2O(l)
