In cases of diarrhoea, calves lose large amounts of fluid and electrolytes that must be replenished via the drink. Electrolytes (acids, bases and salts) form a delicate balance in the body; imbalance can be life-threatening. Calves also suffer heat stress from ambient temperatures around 20 °C, causing increased sweating, loss of electrolytes, reduced appetite and decreased vitality. A milk-only supply is not sufficient to restore electrolytes; an interim electrolyte drink is required.
