The chaLYNX computer vision system can be used in agriculture for intelligent real-time detection of plants and their condition in outdoor environments. It consists of a lighting unit, a camera module, and a remote high-performance processing unit. The remote processing unit can be installed in a different location, making it ideally protected from harsh environmental influences or theft. The chaLYNX system allows for the automation of novel processes in plant cultivation, such as selective plant protection or harvesting tasks. The processing unit of the chaLYNX system can be easily trained with new image data for the respective application and put into practical use in no time.
The sensor system consists of a unit for shading ambient light. Inside, there are LED lighting modules that optimally illuminate plants for image capture under homogeneous conditions, regardless of the time of day. Each sensor unit is equipped with high-power LED lighting modules suitable for the application, which illuminate the surface with a minimum of 50,000 lux. The illumination strength refers to a uniformly illuminated area of approximately one square meter, considering a distance between the surface and lighting modules of about 80 cm. The light spectrum and color temperature can be adjusted if necessary. Illumination is synchronized with image capture or occurs exclusively when an image is taken. Additionally, the individual lighting units can be directly addressed in segments by the processing unit via CAN, allowing for configuration of light intensity.
The sensor system is installed in a protected housing with cooling and features an automatic lens cleaning system. Image data transmission from the camera to the processing unit is carried out via the robust high-speed data transmission method GMSL. A computing unit can process image data from up to two sensor systems.
