An underground strip plough that forms ‘underground ridges’ makes the growing of maize crops more resistant. The underground strip plough makes a ridge underneath the grass surface leaving the untilled top layer resting against the slope of the ridge. This allows the water to run away easily from the seed and drain away between the rows of maize. The rest of the soil is left alone in this innovative approach which results in fertile soil because it retains organic matter and active soil life. Because less ground is ploughed, there is less leaching of nitrate compared to a traditionally ploughed field. The width of the hoes above the ploughs has been adapted to root development which is therefore gets plenty of room for optimal root development.
